A prospective customer in Florida asked for photos of our Chamaedorea microspadix palms, and wanted to know the cost of shipping one to his location. Obviously he was disregarding the very first sentence in our website, tab "We Ship!". "Indian Rock ships plants except to Florida and overseas”. The reason for this is that Florida was plagued with a disease affecting the Sago (Cycas revoluta) and other plants resulting in very strict and costly requirements for plants entering or leaving this state. I sent several photos of this palm and suggested that he consider a 15 gallon plant. Why? A 48” x 12” x 12” box with a 15 gallon palm might weigh 20 pounds, and the shipping cost by FedEx would be around $100. A 20 gallon plant would be much larger, weighing much more, and would require a larger box. The result would be a shipping cost of $175. to $200. In almost every case, a person wanting this larger palm would be countermanded by their spouse who actually handles the finances in this family. It would turn out to be an waste of time.
A Chamaedorea microspadix story….
So, after that I decided to contact a good cycad customer of ours, and just show him photos of this very nice palm. He volunteers his time as a docent for a botanical garden and is very knowledgeable. Perhaps he would offer some ideas, perhaps a correction to my presentation or know of someone interested in a mature, quality palm; he has offered many valuable suggestions in the past. Guess what! He IMMEDIATELY bought the Chamaedorea microspadix shown below, for he knew it was specimen quality and priced quite low. And besides, he lives only 25 miles away, so he can fetch this palm easily. In this case, it would be a practical purchase.
As the result of this I have changed the terms of our shipping policy, stating that we will no longer consider shipping 20 gallon plants.
Chamaedorea microspadix, 20 gallon, 5’ tall from soil line, 27 stems, 2 new shoots, 6 seed clumps, leaflet width 0.8”-1.2”, 28 years old, $229.
