Jubaea chilensis

Over 30 years old, presently in the ground.  They are competitively priced, based on per foot of BTH (brown trunk height) and the trunk caliper (width).  They are not discounted.

Because of their extraordinary size and weight, they must be dug and delivered by a professional digging crew, at buyer's cost.  We will connect you with a crane/tractor operator extraordinaire.  He can handle the digging at both ends, here and at the desired destination.  He is a professional.

The two J. chilensis with 32"-36" trunk caliper near the shadehouse can be dug and lifted with a medium-sized backhoe with 3000 pound lift capability, e.g., Case 580N EP.

The two J. chilensis with 49"-51" trunk caliper at the bottom of the driveway near the greenhouse will require a crane due to the ground slope angle.

Provenance:  MAY1999, a Jubaea chilensis, 24” box was acquired for $300. at the annual Spring Palm and Cycad Sale at Quail Botanical Gardens, Encinitas.  A member of the Quail Botanical Gardens Foundation who lived in La Jolla with limited garden space decided to donate his mature JC to the PSSC.  Planted immediately, this palm trunk was short and around 14” in diameter, with leaves 5 feet tall.  It had been kept in this container too long (long roots growing out the bottom of this box).  It was at least 15 years old.  It was planted near JC #2 that was a 5-gallon size in 1996.  One would reason that #1 JC would be much bigger than #2 JC, nope.  This is a perfect example of how one should plant palms—they must be shifted to the next size up container or into the ground whenever roots just begin to show.  The growth rate would then be proper.  This #1 JC sulked for about 8 years, then started growing.  No harm done, just more time spent.  40 years old.

Provenance:  SEP1995, acquired from JD Andersen Nursery, Fallbrook a Jubaea chilensis, 5-gallon for $35.  It was planted in the ground OCT1996 when roots just began to show, our first JC.  With some struggle at the beginning, within a year it was fully “hooked up” and growing well, indeed it became the fattest and tallest JC that we had at that point.  33 years old, with 27 years grown in-ground.

Provenance for #3, #4:  MAR2005, acquired from a young collector, Ken of Del Mar, two Jubaea chilensis, 20-gal, 10” trunk diameter, with perfect leaves 7 feet tall from the soil line, $600. for both.  They were extraordinary specimen level JC’s.  Their large size indicated that they were grown in-ground for probably 15 years.  He realized that they would soon outgrow his small yard.  Ken had just joined the PSSC DEC2004 and mentioned this to his friend, my co-worker.  She told him that I was formerly the president of the PSSC and had a nursery--the rest is history.   These JC’s were planted at the bottom of our property near the large greenhouse JUN2006.   This location is excellent for in-ground palms and cycads due to the slope of the ground (ensuring good drainage) with consistent moist earth due to the watering of the nearby greenhouse, 150 Patch and 300 Patch.  34 years old, nearly all years grown in-ground.
